Thing a Week 1: Hand-Drawn Walk Cycle

Well, it’s been a week, and I think I came through. My goal was to produce at least one hand-drawn walk cycle. I haven’t done one since college, and back then they weren’t great. I’m pretty happy with my first two attempts.

First, I did a standard walk cycle. I’m using Autodesk Sketchbook Pro on my Lenovo Thinkpad 12 with an active digitizer. Sketchbook Pro has had a flipbook option for a while now and I’ve been using the software for years without knowing it was there.

I could have doubled the frames to smooth it out, but I’m pretty happy with the movement, even if it’s pretty textbook. I finished this pretty quick, so a few days later I started working on something a little more fun:

This one was a lot of fun. I love the arm movement, but the feet need some work. I know movement is supposed to arc, and it’s missing the mark there. That said, I did it! I am excited to do more animation, whether I make mistakes or nail it.

As for next week, I think I’m going to do a little simple video editing and create a vlog. Let’s see how it goes! Until next week!
